Samhain Sabbat

The celebration of Samhain, could be likened to the Witches’ Christmas!

In modern society, we recognise October 31st as being Halloween, a time for dressing up in the scariest, spookiest costumes to go trick or treating around the local neighbourhood.

But what is Samain?

Samhain means β€˜end of Summer’. It is the third and final harvest, and the beginning of the Winter half of the year on this Sabbat. The Sun, God and Earth all fall into slumber as the nights lengthen and Winter begins.

During this period, we recognise the veil between realms are substantially thinner. The laws of time and space are temporarily suspended, as we are able to communicate with ancestors and departed loved ones much easier during this time. Boundaries are dissolved and all is laid bare.

As a traditional Celtic festival, it was also known as β€˜the Feast of the Dead’ and was celebrated by leaving offerings on altars and doorsteps for the β€˜wandering dead’. Single candles were lit and placed on windowsills to help guide the spirits of passed over loved ones. Extra chairs were placed around the dining table, apples were buried along roadsides and turnips and pumpkins were hollowed out and carved to signify protective spirits.
